What would you do if someone asked you, “Your money or your life?” It’s a question playfully posed by Vicky Robin and Joe Dominguez, co-authors of Your Money or Your Life: Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Achieving Financial Independence. The authors answer saying, “I’ll take both, thank you!”
First published in 1992, Your Money or Your Life was a New York Times bestseller that sold one million copies. I remember reading this classic book more than twenty years ago. As someone who believes there is more to life than just making money, I found their approach to money refreshingly different.
Robin will be speaking in Menasha on Tuesday, April 26 and in Appleton on Wednesday, April 27. Called the “prophet of consumption downsizing” by The New York Times, her common sense approach to money has inspired thousands of people to rethink where money fits in their lives.
Robin invites people to develop “financial integrity” and prioritize our spending. She recommends pursuing “financially independent thinking” and having a source of income other than paid employment. To Robin, financial independence does not mean being rich: “Financial Independence is the experience of having enough-and then some.”
Robin asks thought-provoking questions like, “What have we earned by working in our lives so far and what do we have to show for it?” She offers a new roadmap to financially independent thinking.
Robin will also speak on Wednesday, April 27 from 1:00 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Fox Valley Technical College’s Bordini Center, talking about “Essentials of Sustainable Living.” Robin is the author of Blessing the Hands that Feed Us: Lessons from a 10-Mile Diet.
She says that in 2010, “I undertook a hyper-local diet to test myself and the sufficiency of my island’s food system.” For 30 days she ate only food produced within 10 miles of her home on Whidbey Island in Puget Sound, Washington. Robin says that eating closer to home can teach us about food, community and our place on earth.
